Epoxy floor installation process in a Calgary garage — heater setup for cold weather coating

How We Install Epoxy Flooring in Calgary

Every epoxy floor we install in Calgary follows the same non-negotiable 4-step system. Concrete surface preparation determines whether a coating lasts 20 years or fails in 2. We treat it accordingly.

Calgary Epoxy Floor Installation: Our 4-Step Process

Epoxy floor failure in Calgary is almost always a preparation problem, not a product problem. Every step in our installation process exists to eliminate the specific conditions that cause coating lifting, peeling, and premature failure on Alberta concrete slabs.

Step 01

Surface Preparation

We grind every concrete slab with industrial diamond equipment before anything else goes down. This removes the weak top layer of concrete entirely and opens the pores so the coating physically locks in rather than sitting on top. The result is a bond that holds through Calgary winters for 15 to 20 years.

Step 02

Primer & Moisture Barrier

A penetrating epoxy primer is applied to all prepared surfaces to deepen adhesion and seal the concrete. We test every slab for moisture and add a moisture barrier on all bare concrete installs for added protection. This step is especially important in Calgary, where seasonal freeze thaw and ground water can drive moisture through concrete slabs and lift coatings that were not properly sealed.

Step 03

Base Coat & Broadcast

A thick epoxy base coat goes down and the selected aggregate, vinyl flake, quartz, or metallic pigment, is worked into the wet film. Flake and quartz systems are covered completely for consistent coverage across the whole surface. Metallic systems are poured thicker and hand blended for a one of a kind depth and pattern that cannot be repeated. Build thickness is what gives the system its structural integrity.

Step 04

Polyaspartic Topcoat

Once the base is fully cured, a commercial grade polyaspartic topcoat seals and protects the entire system. It resists abrasion, chemicals, and UV rays without yellowing or dulling under Calgary's intense prairie sunlight. This is what keeps the floor looking sharp for 15 years and beyond.

Why Concrete Preparation Determines Everything

The most common cause of epoxy floor failure in Calgary is inadequate surface preparation, not the coating itself. A great product applied to a poorly prepared slab will still fail. Our preparation eliminates every failure mode before the first coat ever goes down.

Diamond grinding achieves the CSP 3 profile that creates a mechanical bond rather than a surface level adhesive bond. Moisture testing protects against vapour driven delamination. Crack repair ensures the coating isn't bridging active substrate movement. Every step exists for a specific reason.

Calgary's freeze thaw climate adds additional stress to improperly bonded floors. Temperature cycling from -40°C to +35°C creates expansion and contraction that peels adhesively bonded coatings. Our mechanical bond withstands it.

Installation Timeline: What to Expect

Most residential garage floors are completed within 2 days. Larger commercial and industrial projects scale with scope, slab condition, and system complexity. We provide a clear timeline before we start and never rush the cure time to hand the floor back faster.

What to Expect

Day 1: Surface preparation, repair, priming, base coat & broadcast
Day 2: Topcoat application
24–48 hrs after topcoat: Light foot traffic
5–7 days: Full vehicle traffic and heavy use
